The History Of Weigh-Less’
Weigh-Less – still changing the shape of the nation’

‘Many a great organisation has started from humble beginnings, and Weigh-Less is no exception. Founded by Mary Holroyd in 1975, with just a bathroom scale and R10 to pay for printing and advertising, Weigh-Less’ growth and success in changing people’s lives for the better has shown that dreams do come true if we pursue them! ‘

‘Who was to know that that first meeting in Mary’s home on 25 February 1975 would quickly spark off 13 Groups in the area, all led by Mary herself? In 1976, the first training programmes began with Rosemary Enstrom, the first member of Weigh-Less, becoming the first Weigh-Less Group Leader in South Africa. In 1978, Weigh-Less held their first Slimmer of the Year competition in the ballroom at the Athlone Hotel in Durban, and Weigh-Less also brought out their first cookbook.’

‘The Weigh-Less food endorsement division has been in operation since 1978. With the variety of foods manufactured by leading South African manufacturers as well as the Weigh-Less Green Band products, it’s no wonder Weigh-Less holds the dominant position in the health and weight management sector of the food and beverage market – giving consumers a range of line items that have been specially formulated to help them make that healthy choice.’

‘Reaching for the sky – and touching it
From here on Weigh-Less grew from strength to strength, to be where it is today, a proudly South African organisation, which is also represented in the UK and other nearby countries like Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. ‘

‘Weigh-Less also provides employment to more than 1 300 field staff members hosting more than 2 900 Groups on a weekly basis in South Africa. Over 47 000 members visit these Groups regularly to receive the motivation and support that would help them through their journey to obtain and maintain their goal weight.
Mary has, through her passion and commitment to changing people’s lives, developed a health and weight management company that provides a holistic eating and health programme to members. The group has strategic alliances to the prudent dietary guidelines of the Association of Dietetics in South Africa, and is endorsed by the Heart Foundation.’
